Major League Baseball player Jose Reyes purchased a home in Old Brookville Thursday, said the head of the real estate firm that sold him the house.
The former Met paid $4.2 million for the 16-room brick and cedar Colonial, according to real estate records. The six-bedroom, six-bath, two-half-bath luxury home had been listed for $4.578 million. It contains 10-foot ceilings and custom millwork.
The property’s 3.51-acre size was among the features that attracted Reyes, shortstop for the Toronto Blue Jays, said Shawn Elliott of Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes & Estates. Lisa Paladino, an agent with the firm, both listed the home and represented Reyes in the transaction.
Reyes was also drawn to the master bedroom suite and its large closets as well as the fact that the house has two family rooms, Elliott said.
And there was something else.
“He loved the gym,” Elliott said. “It’s like the kind you’d find at Equinox.”
The basement where it’s located has a spa and sauna, wine cellar and wet bar.

In the early 1900s, wealthy New Yorkers came to Brookville to build lavish country homes on sprawling properties. Notable residents included banker, attorney and diplomat Winthrop W. Aldrich, who built a 40-room manor on 108 acres.
Today, this bucolic North Shore village continues to attract the affluent. In fact, in 2009, the village of Brookville was named by BusinessWeek magazine as the wealthiest community in the United States.
“Most come for the schools and privacy,” says Elyse Mayer of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “It’s in a great spot. I love its proximity to New York City,” adds Shawn Elliott, owner of Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes & Estates. (It’s about 25 miles to Manhattan.)
And the village is one of the few places in Nassau County where you can find a horse property, says Lois Kirschenbaum of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty .
Narrow winding roads weave throughout the village, where the size of manicured properties is at least 2 acres. Buyers can find just about any style home. And they come in a variety of sizes — from modest to grand.
Prices typically start north of $1 million. A fixer-upper or knockdown on a 2-acre parcel can fetch $1.3 million to $1.5 million, Kirschenbaum says. Homes in Broadhollow, a premier area of Brookville, start at about $3 million, Elliott says.
SALES PRICES. From Aug. 1, 2012, to Sept. 30, 2013, there were 29 sales with a median price of $1.650 million, according to Multiple Listing Service of Long Island data. The low price was $875,000, and the high was $3.75 million. From Aug. 1, 2011, to Sept. 30, 2012, there were 24 sales. The median price was $1,588,500, with a low of $950,000 and a high of $2.9 million.
ATTRACTIONS. LIU Post offers cultural and recreational venues for the public, including the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, the Steinberg Museum of Art and the 40-acre arboretum. The private Tam O’Shanter Club on Fruitledge Road features an 18-hole golf course.

Renowned for its historic district, the village of Roslyn has more than 80 landmark sites. Perhaps the most prominent is the 1895 clock tower, which stands 44 feet tall on Northern Boulevard.
Also in the district are 18th and 19th century homes, the Roslyn Grist Mill and boutiques and restaurants that dot Main Street, Old Northern Boulevard and East Broadway. “There’s so much history . . . and the duck pond is so enchanting,” says Andrea Jablow of Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes & Estates.
Gerry Park, where Bryant Library is located, is a gathering place where residents can enjoy summer concerts and winter activities such as sleigh riding. The park is named for Roger and Peggy Gerry, who founded the Roslyn Preservation Corp. and the Roslyn Landmark Society in the early 1960s.
While the housing stock includes vintage Italianate, Federal and Greek Revival styles, buyers can also find a mix of styles from this century. Developments outside the historic district include Roslyn Pines and Marchant Park. The village is active and strong, says Renee Hughes of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. At any price point, Hughes adds, buyers “get a solid strong return on the dollar.”
Since the village is centrally located, residents have easy access to major highways, roadways and Manhattan, as well as to area hospitals.
SALES PRICE. Year over year, the numbers are up in the Greater Roslyn area, according to Multiple Listing Service of Long Island data. From Oct. 1, 2012 to Nov. 20, 2013, there were 66 sales with a median price of $765,000. The low price was $180,000 and the high was $1,725,000. From Oct. 1, 2011 to Nov. 20, 2012, there were 55 sales. The median price was $730,000, with a low of $257,000 and a high of $730,000.

A home in Brookville with a driveway that cost close to a half-million dollars is on the market for $7.95 million.
“They paid real attention to detail from beginning to end,” says listing agent John Messina of Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes & Estates.
“When you drive up to the house, it’s a very long driveway, and it’s a gradual approach, and it’s like you’re driving to heaven,” Messina says. “You wonder what can be inside, and then it gets better.”
Inside, there’s a two-story entrance facing a bridal staircase with iron scrollwork.
The home was designed by architect Gary Gallagher of Gallagher, Homburger & Gonzalez. It has six bedrooms, six bathrooms and two half-bathrooms.
There’s a balcony off the master bedroom, custom cabinetry in the kitchen and windows imported from Germany, Messina says.
Called Haut Bois, this Brookville home, designed by architect Ogden Codman Jr. and built in 1916 for Walter Effingham Maynard, a Francophile, was inspired by the Louis XIV hunting lodge that became the palace at Versailles. It is now on the market for $16.5 million.
The restored French chateau-style home has seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms and two half-bathrooms.
Inside looks like a palace, with a long marble entry hall, intricate moldings, murals and herringbone floors.
A billiards room with coffered ceilings and a wine cellar is on the lower level. Outside on the eight-acre property are gardens, a reflecting pool and a fountain designed by Jacques Greber.

Nassau County’s housing market roared to life in March after a sluggish winter. The milder weather gave Suffolk County a smaller boost.
The median price of homes in Nassau jumped year-over-year by 10.3 percent, to $419,000, and the number of sales spiked by 13.7 percent over the same period, the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island reported Wednesday.
Suffolk’s gains were more modest, with the median sales price hitting $307,000, a 1.7 percent rise compared with the previous March. The number of sales grew also, by 5 percent.
There was a “tremendous amount of pent-up demand” among buyers at the end of last month, said Shawn Elliott of Woodbury-based Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes & Estates. “All of a sudden the snow melted at the end of March and they all came out in droves,” he said.
Current near-record-low interest rates that are expected to rise later this year also are motivating buyers, Elliott said. The average interest rate for a fixed-rate, 30-year home loan was 3.66 percent last week, mortgage giant Freddie Mac reported.
A limited supply of homes also gives prices a boost, as buyers compete for the most desirable properties, said Steven Weizel, sales manager at Century 21 Dallow Realty in Farmingdale. In a few cases, bidding wars are driving prices up 1 to 2 percent above asking prices, he said.
There were 15,767 homes listed for sale last month in Nassau and Suffolk, 2.4 percent fewer than the previous March and less than half the peak of 32,302 in June 2008, according to listing service data.
In both counties, last month was a busy time for prospective buyers. In Nassau, 962 homes went into contract, a year-over-year gain of nearly 7 percent. Suffolk home buyers signed 1,139 contracts, 8.2 percent more than the previous March.
The median price of pending sales in Nassau ticked up by 2 percent, to $428,225. Median pending sales prices in Suffolk made a 4.3 percent gain, to $323,300.
Real estate agents hope the momentum continues. The Long Island Board of Realtors’ scheduled Open House Weekend this Saturday and Sunday “can only help attract more people,” Weizel said. The sixth annual event offers a look inside 3,000 homes in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens.Those attending eligible open houses can enter a raffle to win one of three $1,500 prizes, a spokeswoman for the board said.
